POLAR

Just how different can two duets be? EDAM's show, Polar, presents two new dance creations that exemplify the breadth of contemporary Canadian dance.

Montreal dancer/choreographer Lin Snelling and Vancouver cellist Peggy Lee perform Quell, a dance directed by EDAM's Artistic Director, Peter Bingham. In this work, the two performers ÒnegotiateÓ a dance, performing both for themselves and each other, responding to each other's initiatives and choices. Quell is difficult to perform, its vitality dependent upon the performers' sensitivity to each other and to the moment. The dance demands a heightened sense of listening, restraint and commitment. Like our daily lives, Quell is ordinary yet unique, challenging yet compelling.

The other half of the program features the thing is violent, the latest creation by Delia Brett and Daelik, artistic directors of MACHiNENOiSY. the thing is violent examines intimacy and the violent effect it can have on self and sense of identity. In this dance, a man and a woman exist in an environment of disaster. Their relationship to each other and to themselves is unclear. As they search the rubble for signs of their lives, they act out scenes of intimacy. They become both victims of disaster and disaster itself. We observe their fragility, their humanity, as they struggle to come to terms with their finite existence.
The sound creation for this work is by Chris Kelly and Emma Hendricks.
