NANCY STARK SMITH is without question the grande dame of the dance technique known as Contact Improvisation, a highly athletic dance form that uses gravity, momentum and balance to move effortlessly through space. Initially trained as an athlete and gymnast, Stark Smith was greatly influenced by the innovations of the Judson Dance Theatre in the 1960s. She took part in many dance events in the 1970s, including the first performances of Contact Improvisation in 1972 with American dance artist Steve Paxton. Since then, she has been a tireless promoter of this dance form, working throughout the world as a performer, teacher and author. In 1975, she founded Contact Quarterly, an international journal of dance and improvisation which she continues to co-edit and produce.
