MORNINGS
CONTACT IMPROVISATION
M - Th / 10am - 12pm
Relational Body
For professional dancers and experienced Contact Improvisation practitioners.
Drop-In: $35 - $50
Mon - Thurs: $100 - $150 (all 4 morning classes)
In these classes we will consider our attention as a resource that allows us a finer and more sensitive awareness of our bodies, and from which we can explore the different systems and structures of our anatomy, awakening greater presence and awareness in our physicalities…
what we feel becomes present.
We will explore how refining our attention can establish a dialogue between physical sensations and relational perception. In the constant dialogue between internal and external perception, perhaps the distinction between them can begin to dissolve.
From this basis we will enter into movement, the encounter with space, and bodies as spaces of dance. Inhabiting ourselves, we will allow ourselves to be danced by the encounter. We will see dance and contact as a river of information that enters and leaves our bodies, connecting us with the planet and its inherent forces.
Together we will explore:
• Using our attention to refine internal body awareness and relational perception with space and other people.
• Tensegrity of connective tissue and fascia as an entry into shared dance.
• Primary developmental patterns in relation to the ground and in interactions with other bodies.
• Nuances of how we organize body weight during transitions, directions, and changes in levels.
• Awakening the skin as a sensory organ that allows us to detect tensions, directions, changes, and micromovements during a dance.
• Utilizing the potential force of spirals to change levels and move with expanded spatial awareness in different planes.
• Different states of body perception and sensation in relation to the laws of physics.
• Connections between the centers (pelvis, torso, and head) and how they relate in the exchange of weight and changes in points of contact.
• Ways of flying (lifts) guided by impulse and relational listening, using an efficient quality of force.
AFTERNOONS
Monday / 1:30 - 4:30pm
Thursday / 1:30 - 4:30pm
Somatics: Layers of Contact
For professional dancers and experienced movement artists, or those with a regular embodiment practice.
Drop-In: $52.50 - $75
Mon + Thurs: $90 - $145
In this workshop, will explore different layers and systems of the body, such as skin, muscles, tissues/fascia, and bones. We will develop our ability to perceive these systems using our attention, and through movement. Continuing these explorations through touch, we will discover the varied qualities of sensation and perception that can unfold with different qualities of touch.
Eventually this research will take us into dancing, where we will discover how each system can offer us specific qualities to work with, which will allow us to expand our range of possibilities and explore new paths in our movement and improvising.
EVENING
Thursday / 6:00 - 8:30pm
