Sunday CI w/ Anne
12:30-2:30pm

A warm-up enters us into ‘body-time’ followed by Contact Improv skills & technique, both with & without a partner and into structured improvisations. We’ll dance in spherical space together in both ‘scored’ and unscored improvisations. We'll access CI fundamentals & movement principals to support and bridge us back attentively into Contact Improvisation through skills suitable for both experienced and new people, and through the dancing itself. We’ll bring the discoveries, questions, & clarity of our explorations with spatial relationships of these past months and see how that resonates both in and out of physical contact. As always, a person can choose how much to enter and, to a degree, how much contact & physical touch to engage in, in the improvisations in the later part of the class.

Materials are sourced from Anne Cooper, Peter Bingham (EDAM AD) as well as the founders of CI, Steve Paxton, Nancy Stark Smith, Nita Little & others.

Anne Cooper has danced with EDAM since 1994. She has performed in the work of many choreographers in Vancouver, BC and with companies in Manitoba and Quebec. She has performed improvisations directed by several well-known dance makers in the field of improvisation; with the EDAM Ensemble, & with (the late, great, & beloved) Nancy Stark Smith, a co-founder of Contact Improvisation in NSS’s ‘Glimpse Performance Installations' (USA). She began teaching Contact Improvisation (Sundays) at EDAM by invitation of Peter Bingham in 2000 and has taught contact improvisation (CI) &/or dance improvisation there & elsewhere ever since. She also facilitates Nancy Stark Smith’s ‘Underscore’. Anne creates her own performance work, often a hybrid of movement, vocalization and words, which has been presented throughout Vancouver.
